G-PAC ANNOUNCES SUPPORT FOR HB 5471 – AMENDMENT 3
CHICAGO – Today, the Gun Violence Prevention PAC (G-PAC), the state’s leading gun safety organization, released the following statement from its CEO Kathleen Sances, following the Senate’s release of amendments to HB 5471 that would ban assault weapons, restrict large-capacity magazines, and address illegal gun trafficking:
“We applaud the Senate’s intensive efforts to confront the gun violence epidemic and pass one of the most meaningful, impactful, life-saving public safety measures in our state’s history. This bill will protect children and families from weapons of war, and move us another step closer to making gun safety a reality in Illinois:
-
Provides an accurate and comprehensive definition and lists of banned assault weapons, and large capacity ammunition magazines;
-
Creates a system to track existing weapons of war, and prevents sales and transfers of these dangerous firearms;
-
Moves up the date for person-to-person, universal background checks to begin on July 1, 2023;
-
Extends the firearm restraining order from six months to one year; and
-
Creates a taskforce to oversee and make recommendations for preventing illegal interstate gun trafficking.
“We are grateful to the Senate for their leadership and relentless determination to move this life-saving legislation forward. We look forward to this bill passing both chambers and becoming law very soon.”
