G-PAC APPLAUDS SCOTUS DECISION TO DENY CHALLENGE TO MARYLAND BAN ON ASSAULT WEAPONS & HIGH-CAPACITY MAGAZINES
CHICAGO – The Gun Violence Prevention PAC of Illinois (G-PAC), the state’s leading gun violence advocacy organization, welcomed the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision today to deny further review of a 4th Circuit Court of Appeals decision upholding Maryland’s ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines.
The Fourth Circuit decision that was left standing today is consistent with the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals decision two years ago on Illinois’ ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines. The Supreme Court’s decision came after gun manufacturers and gun groups have repeatedly predicted the Fourth Circuit decision would be considered by the Court. Only three dissenting justices voted to take the case in the Court’s ruling on Monday.
“Each court of appeals that has taken up a challenge to a ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines has found these laws to be constitutional. These are lethal weapons designed for military purpose, not for self-defense. We welcome the Supreme Court’s action that will allow Illinois’ assault weapons ban and similar bans across the country to continue to protect Americans,” said John Schmidt, G-PAC Executive Board Member and former U.S. Associate Attorney General.
