Lyons Approves Ordinance to safeguard public in gun sales
G-PAC Urges Lincolnwood and Riverdale to Follow
Lyons, Illinois – Village Mayor Christopher Getty announced that the village has approved an ordinance that spells out procedures to help crackdown on the sale of guns to “straw purchasers” after a unanimous vote by the City Council yesterday afternoon.
The ordinance responds to a lawsuit filed last July alleging three suburban Chicago communities including Lyons are responsible for guns sold legally at a village-based gun shop that later made their way into the hands of criminals.
The lawsuit was brought on behalf of the Coalition for Safe Chicago Communities with the financial support and backing of G-PAC (Gun Violence Prevention PAC).
Kathleen Sances, Executive Director of G-PAC, was elated to hear of Lyons decision to settle with the plaintiffs and pass the ordinance to crack down on straw purchasing. “We would like to thank Mayor Getty, the Village of Lyons, and Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart for their eagerness to work with us to help end gun violence,” said Sances.
“G-PAC provided backing for the plaintiffs because we know taking steps to discourage the illegal trafficking of guns in Lyons, Riverdale and Lincolnwood will save lives throughout Chicago. We hope Riverdale and Lincolnwood will follow the example set by Lyons and move to adopt this ordinance before the next court briefing on Friday.”
According to a 2014 Chicago report, three gun shops in Cook County and an additional shop in Gary, Indiana, provide nearly 20 percent of the guns recovered in Chicago crime scenes. Those illegal firearms flow into a pocket of communities destroying lives and tearing apart communities. The plaintiffs are victims and survivors that reside in these neighborhoods including Father Michael Phleger, Annette Holt, Pam Bosley, Rev. Robin and Louvenia Hood.
