We have some good news this week.
Facebook is banning private, person-to-person sales of guns. The social network with 1.6 billion monthly visitors had become one of the world’s largest marketplaces for guns – a marketplace that did not require background checks. This announcement is a positive step toward stopping illegal online gun sales. Our gratitude goes out to Everytown for Gun Safety and the Moms Demand Action for their persistent efforts over the last two years to stop these unlicensed sales.
Now for news here at home – January 2016.
Two hours into 2016, DeAndre Holiday, a 24-year-old father of three, became another victim of Chicago’s gun violence, fatally shot in the chest as he left a New Year’s Eve party.
In the weeks since, the tally of those killed has hit 53, making January the deadliest start to a year in Chicago in at least 16 years.
The problem is easy access to guns. It’s time for our elected representatives in Springfield to enact safety measures that will stop criminals from buying guns. Period. If they don’t, we will elect someone who will.
