SPRINGFIELD — The Gun Violence Prevention PAC of Illinois (G-PAC), the state’s leading gun violence advocacy organization, applauded Illinois lawmakers for passing Karina’s Bill to better protect survivors of domestic violence.
House members passed the bill in a bipartisan 80-33 vote today to send Karina’s Bill to Gov. Pritzker for his consideration, following Monday’s Senate vote of 43-10.
“For over a year, we’ve worked hard alongside The Network and the Illinois Gun Violence Prevention Coalition leading the charge to pass Karina’s Bill,” said Kathleen Sances, G-PAC president and CEO. “With this law, we can better protect survivors and their safety, not the rights of their abusers. We are grateful to House Speaker Welch, Senate President Harmon, Senator Villanueva and Representative Hirschauer for their commitment to protecting survivors.”
Karina’s Bill will give law enforcement the power to remove firearms from the homes of known domestic abusers after an order of protection is entered against them. Under current law, this is a voluntary process. The bill honors the memory of Karina Gonzalez and her 15-year-old daughter, Daniela, who were shot and killed by Gonzalez’s husband in 2023, less than two weeks after Gonzalez obtained an order of protection against him.
As the lame duck session adjourns and a new General Assembly is sworn in Wednesday, G-PAC will continue to work this spring to advance gun safety legislation, including its Safe At Home package to better prevent children, at-risk individuals, and criminals from accessing deadly weapons and inflicting tragedy at home and in Illinois communities.
