G-PAC Joins President Biden in Celebrating Safer Communities Act, Continues Call for Assault Weapons Ban
Washington, D.C. — At the invitation of President Biden, the Gun Violence Prevention PAC joined survivors, advocates and policymakers like Governor JB Pritzker and Highland Park Mayor Nancy Rotering at the White House today to celebrate the bipartisan Safer Communities Act.
“After 28 years of inaction by the federal government, Congress passed and President Biden signed into law a significant national crackdown on dangerous weapons and illegal purchasers,” said Kathleen Sances, President and CEO of the Gun Violence Prevention PAC. “While we recognize this major accomplishment and step forward, it’s only a first step that I’m hopeful could be turned into momentum to further strengthen federal gun laws. Since its passage, G-PAC has called for an assault weapons ban and high capacity magazine limit, and we won’t stop pushing for progress until state and federal leaders finish the job.”
Following the SCOTUS ruling that permitted handguns in public spaces at the cost of public safety, G-PAC has advocated for the two measures which have become central in conversations around a legislaptive solution and response to the Highland Park mass shooting here in Illinois. Governor Pritzker shared this agenda on CNN yesterday, telling Jake Tapper: “We need to ban assault weapons, not just in the state of Illinois, but nationally… and high capacity magazines: there’s no reason why someone should have 90 bullets at the ready.”
In the wake of the shooting, G-PAC amplified its call with a petition to demand immediate action by the General Assembly to ban assault weapons in Illinois.
Survivors of the Highland Park mass shooting started a petition of their own, which has garnered more than 56,000 signatures and counting.
