This year, we saw two life saving measures signed into law. On January 10, 2023, Illinois became the 9th state to pass comprehensive legislation banning the sale and possession of assault weapons (Protect Illinois Communities Act). The law imposes an immediate ban on the manufacturing and sale of assault weapons, high-capacity magazines, and switches in Illinois.
In May, 2023, Illinois passed the Firearms Industry Responsibility Act (FIRA), a law that allows victims and survivors of gun violence to hold gun manufacturers accountable through legal action for the harm they have caused by either their actions or inactions.
Holding our officials accountable is a critical element to this progress and a more peaceful Illinois. It is our hope that you will find this report card helpful in understanding which of your officials are committed to creating safe communities for everyone.
The legislation in the Gun Safety Report Card is the culmination of the work of survivors, public supporters, and gun safety champions who advocated tirelessly for laws that will keep Illinois children, families, and communities safe from gun violence.
